HM> WC> 13 User version support for 12 serial ports

HM> WC> though. An intellegent system is reccommended for systems running
HM> WC> the more than 5 lines at speeds in excess of 14400 mainly for
HM> WC> performance. This is entirly upto you though.

HM> How would a 13-user version of System Manager help you with
HM> a BBS, though? I'd presume that System Manager itself would
HM> only touch serial ports when it was using them for
HM> connections to terminals. The BBS will have entirely
HM> different uses and ways of using the ports. Hence a
HM> console-only version would be the most appropriate in most
 HM> situations.

thats true but you don't have the ports, The Single user only uses 2 ports
Com 1 & 2, the three user uses ports Com 1 & 2 as well as its OWN
special ports 3 & 4. all systems above that come with the required
" hardware " eg serial ports. These ports can be setup as either
Serial Colour terminals , Mono terminals, AUX ports ( modem, printers, fax
machines & scanners etc ) ,
or Mice. To run a BBS all the Sysop has to do is set his / her software to
run on COM 1 after they go above come 4 ( depending on version ) and set
the required flag in the fossil string for the port it is acutally using.
eg...

BBS is actually on Multi-User port 3 which would be com 7 if you think normally..

Remote Access port = 1
Front Door port = 1
Fossil string is Smfossil /P5 /38400 /i0 /f
stands for Port 5
                              Locked port speed
/i0 Idle detect ( not really needed )
/f set flow control to RTS/CTS

all that needs to be changed to make extra lines if using the same config
is the port /P.

The 13 " Buffered " user which I run comes with 12 serial ports,
and console making it 13 users.

System Manager is an " Operating System " once it is started from
boot up it initizalises all the ports to the way you have them setup. for a
BBS they would be setup as AUX ports. If you start DOS ( or what ever )
instead then the ports would be inactive.

hope that explains it. BTW System Manager uses its own serial ports as
there is no real IBM standard above 2 yet..

cheers
                Wazza
