| subject: | MS`s `.NET` |
Here's what I understand about the ".NET" thingie from Microsoft. I'm hoping that someone will correct me (IOW, this system seems to be totally lame): 1) .net programs run on a virtual machine that so far only Microsoft produces. Since MS only supports development on one platform (Windows, which runs only on a little-endian Intel or work-alike). 2) Whereas Java is "write once in Java, run anywhere", .net is trying to be "write once in ANY language, run anywhere". TTBMOK, any language translates to visual basic and c, so far. 3) MS has abandoned MFC in the .net program in favor of pre-built objects (which may be written in any language that runs in the .net system. My question is: There are several applications that I've written (for my own use mostly) that are Windows programs and depend heavily on MFC. Those programs are all executibles; that is, they're all ".EXE"s. Can anyone tell me this: do I need to do total rewrites if I wish to migrate to ".NET"? It seems to me that if I need to do total rewrites than I may be better off migrating to Linux and rewriting in Xwindows. I would appreciate any comments, regardless of substance. þ CMPQwk 1.42 999 --- Maximus/2 3.01* Origin: COMM Port OS/2 juge.com 204.89.247.1 (281) 980-9671 (1:106/2000) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 @PATH: 106/2000 633/267 |
