Consider the location. Is it near the road or driveway? Its possible if so
that the previous owner (if your house was owned before by another)
chemically damaged the earth in that spot with oil or something. If a new
house, consider that a simular thing may have happened.
You may have to dig up a layer of that dirt and replace it completely with
fresh undamaged dirt from someplace else if this is a case.
My house had such a dumping spot. For me, it was in the backyard, near a
workshed the earlier owners had had. Could have been almost anything from
oilbased paints, to kerosene for all I know. I had to dig it down about 4
inches, and took the easy refill option of potting soil.
