In the US, insurance has morphed from the concept where insurance risk is
spread over a large population to an equalized payment plan (medical
insurance), or an individualized risk assessment policy. As such,
household insurance is now referred to as "Use it and lose it". Make 2-3
small claims in 1-2 years and you'll be dropped from coverage because you
have been determined to be high risk. So you should raise the deductible
to the sky since it's truely for disaster cases only. But the providers
are only too happy to continue extending policies with a $50 deductible on
a $400,000 house - as long as no claims are regularly made.
