Responding to a message by Sheila, to Charles on ...
SK>CB>Is it really plausible that Berkeley graduated more than 75 students
SK>CB>who cannot perform at what the state claims is merely a 10th grade
SK>CB>level?"
SK>
SK>I think this certainly IS possible.
Maybe we need standardized tests for college grads too? Or is that
what the CBEST purports to do?
SK>What is so alarming about a number of the persons who do not pass, is
SK>that they cannot pass the _writing_ portion of the exam.
One of my favorite complaints - just think about it - we graduate
kids who score only 65% in reading and writing. Imagine getting a
letter from someone in which 35% of the syntax is incorrect, in
which 35% of the spelling is incorrect, etc. It would be nearly illegible.
SK>This is entirely possible. I wouldn't be surprised in the least that the
SK>exam is culturally biased. I think it is very difficult to write an exam
SK>that is in no way culturally biased.
Some prototypes of the SAT were produced on which scores of whites
and minorities were not significantly different, but they were never
adopted.
