Hi Mike,
Here's some of the information you were looking for re: King Crimson.
I tried to list all the regular releases. I don't think I'm missing any,
but I'm not absolutely sure. (If anybody else can add to this, please do).
However, I've deliberately not included any of the various compilations or
box sets that have been released.
1) In the Court of the Crimson King - (1969)
2) In the Wake of Poseidon - (1970)
3) Lizard - (1970)
4) Islands - (1971)
5) Earthbound - (1972)
6) Lark's Tongue in Aspic - (1973)
7) Starless & Bible Black - (1974)
8) Red - (1974)
9) U.S.A. - (1975)
10) Discipline - (1981)
11) Beat - (1982)
12) Three of a Perfect Pair - (1984)
13) Thrak - (1993)
I've got brief reviews of some of these albums in my files if you're
interested. FWIW, (5) is a live album featuring the same core band that
played on (4). (7) is comprised of two studio tracks and six live
tracks while (9) is entirely a live album. Both were recorded with the
same players as (6) minus percussionist Jamie Muir. (9) was actually
recorded on a U.S. tour before (8) but was released afterward.
Confused?
Oh yeah, ....I've only heard (7) once or twice many years ago, but
according to the information I have, "Starless" from (8) is not the
same song, or even derived from the title track of (7).
Robert Fripp reformed King Crimson in 1981 and as you may know, the
band that made (10), (11), and (12) was made up of Fripp, Adrian Belew,
Tony Levin and Bill Bruford. Those three albums are fairly similar in
over all style.
After another hiatus during which Fripp formed the Guitar Craft school,
those four players appeared together once more again for (13). This
time they were augmented by the addition of Pat Mastelotto (drums and
percussion), and Guitar Craft alumnus, Trey Gunn (Chapman stick).
Anyway, I hope this helps. If you need more info, let me know....
Cheers,
Martin
