 Well, I seem to have found the answer, though I have no idea why it 
 should work.... 
  
 I added a speed option to the command  
 (cdrecord dev=0,1,0 speed=4 blank=all) and it seems to be working. 
 Never had to set the speed when blanking with the Yamaha, but I guess I 
 can live with it. Be interesting to know why its needed with the IDE 
 drive.

    Just a WAG, but perhaps the higher quality of the Yamaha CD-RW has a 
default of 4 for blanking, whereas the LiteOn runs at or near its 
highest speed for all operations.  Anyway, thanks for the tip.
