I think that you should start teaching yourself C right away. C is not very 
hard to learn (after all any programming is easy) and you can learn the speed 
you want if you teach yourself.
On the books the best advice that I can give you is to go to library and ask 
for a C-programming book, or if your library has computers that you can use 
to search books then I recommend using key words like 'C programming' or 
'programming in C'.
