Some of us are still using the bbs just like we did when all we had was
local dialup, not telnetting all over the world as we can and do now. 
There are often very good reasons for using older technology, and not
everyone jumps to use the newest thing out there.  Even if some of the
users of the bbs have and use the newest, or even just the alternative,
ways of accessing things, there are also the other users, like me, that
do not have (or haven't learned to use, which ends up being the same
thing) the other options.  And files aren't the only thing that gets
downloaded or uploaded to/from a bbs, you know...  Some of us still use
offline message readers and get message packets and send reply packets
in the mail doors, which also need the protocol.   :)
