JS>VH>JS>Then why did he see it necessary to neck it up to .35"? Or was he
jus
JS>VH>JS>having a sandow moment?
JS>VH>He didn't. Some of his cohorts at Springfield were messing around and
JS>VH>necked up the .30-06, and decided to call it the ".35 Whelen" --
JS>VH>probably on the theory that the prestige of his name would help promote
JS>VH>it.
JS>Actually, I see a fair bit of reason to be messing around with the 30.06
JS>cartridge. As long as you can get 30.06 brass, and assuming you have the
JS>propre dies to begin with, you'll always be able to get brass for your
JS>rifle, inlike, say, 30-40 Krag, which while not obscure, is probably not
JS>going to be stocked in some Montana fishing camp with a seasonal
JS>population of 12... :-)
The .30-06 will never die -- although late at night, I fantasize about
finding a pre-'64 Model 70 with the barrel shot out, and the asking
price about $100 -- and having it bored out and re-rifled and
re-chambered to .33-'06. :-)
