By + and - I assume you mean matter and anti-matter, not
protons/positrons and electrons/anti-protons.  Actually, when matter and
anti-matter come in contact, a violent reaction occurs, and the
substances are converted directly into energy.  E=mc^2.  That's A LOT of
energy.  The dilithium crystal is the only substance that can control
this reaction and also not react with anti-matter.  The reaction is
stabilized and a very efficient means of propulsion is harnessed.
(Incidentally, some have speculated and have very tentative evidence
that the U.S. government already has developed M/AM propulsion.  For

about (in the real world) any time soon, but I wouldn't be suprised if
it happened in, say, 300-400 years?
