Hi C.D.
Just got home from vacation and caught the tail-end of your comments
about Bob Martens in Houston. We, too, purchased a pair of Macaws
(Greenwings) from him about 6-7 years back, sight unseen of course. He
was speaking at a local club and came to visit our home when we lived in
Omaha.
Anyway, this pair was represented to be in "perfect condition" and were
triple clutchers! He did mention that the Female was missing a couple
feathers due to the male preening her too hard. When they arrived, one
of these birds was plucked terribly! After complaining and
documenting this with photos, the price was finally dropped!
Fortunately, with a large cage, a great diet, and lots of TLC, the
plucking stopped and beautiful feathers finally took hold. No babies
appeared, however. I figured this was normal...new home, new climate, new
diet etc etc etc. After a year, I had Dr. Scott McDonald surgically sex
them for my own peace of mind. The Female turned out to be a male... BUT,
fortunately, the MALE turned out to be a female!! In the 6-7 years, they
have produced 4 clutches, a far cry from the triple clutches he
represented them to produce each year.
Today, they are in perfect feather and are healthy and happy. They did
double clutch this year, although their second clutch eggs were
infertile. I cannot prove it but I feel that these birds had never bred
before they came to us! These were the last birds I ever bought sight
unseen. Today, I drive/fly to see all birds before plunking down the
cash. Unfortunately, we do not have any Yellow Collars here and wish you
well in finding mates for yours!
Chuck
