The symptoms have been around forever, most likely. Effective treatment is
relatively new, and effective (widespread) diagnosis even newer.
The reason kids get "labeled" ADHD when they have varying attending
difficulties and/or behavioral problems is because that's the label which was
given to the syndrome. Obviously there are other problems which have
overlapping symptoms, but that doesn't mean that ADHD is a phony diagnosis.
