Why do you need to reset the set to nil before redefinition?
Are you looping back to a point where you select more entities after
processing a partial set? If so, then I don't know, unless at the point that
you're trying to do this perhaps setq'ing it to an undefined variable, if
possible, might slip one over on it (setq ss1 "!ssx"). If not, then ssget
would be more appropriate I would think.
                                   (setq ss1 ("!ssx"))  ?
