Hi All,
We just came off of a four night gig. Wednesday to Saturday at a local night
club (10:00 - 2:00 each night). We slacked off big time on Wed. and Thurs.
The reason we did that was when the New Years gig was allotted, we were the
first band to ask, and he gave the gig to another band. We draw better than
the other band, but they have a long history with that particular manager
(patronage). We then demanded a raise, and didn't get it. So, Wed and Thurs
nights, we only did three sets by starting late and taking big breaks. We
also only did about 7 songs a set. On Wed., there were guys from 3 other
bands there, and we let them all use our gear and jam for a while (5 songs).
We know all these guys and like them, so no big deal, but it meant more
slacking off for us. When we did play, we sounded good, and got a lot of
compliments. Aren't we rebellious!
Friday and Saturday were less than standing room only. Packed house both
nights. Got huge applause for our version of "Walking on the Sun"; the boys
have the vocals nailed perfect in that one, and I'm pretty close on the
keyboards. Good encores at the end.
Everytime I go in that place to hear another band (on a Friday or Saturday),
there is always a 3/4 crowd. Everytime we play there it's packed. I used to
think that it was just lucky weekends, but even the bar staff say we draw the
best. You would think that place would give us "even a little more" respect.
But no. I don't think we'll play there for a long time now, it's not worth
it for just $65 a night. I do like the big PA and drums that sound like
cannons, but the 2:00 am is a killer as well (I still gotta go to work).
Private dances are the best. Much better pay, and people are there to dance
to the band.
