The famine began in 1846, and continued for three years. By the census of
1851, the population of Ireland had fallen to about 4 million, compared to
the 8 million of the census of 1841. About half the missing people died,
the other half immigrated.

My grandfather told me the story of the Famine, listing the names of those
in the family who died -- and made me eat the peel of the potato,
"because people went hungry in Ireland." It was his grandfather
who survived the Famine, coming first to Newfoundland, then Prince Edward
Island, and finally the United States.
