| subject: | Re: [OS2HW] Sorta OT help! |
Hello all
This may be a bit more software oriented but it is also hardware related
and certainly OS/2. I only hope someone here has done a fresh install
recently or has a better memory than mine because for some 8 years now I
have avoided fresh installs and simply ghosted my old install to a new box,
drive whatever (which is one really great thing about OS/2 since few, if
any OSes do that with so little preparation) but my experience with how
sweetly WSeB 4.5 runs on my AMD 64 box combined with my disdain at
multi-booting newer OS/2 (it stopped playing nice round about LVM/VCU time)
has prompted me to update my standalone box so I can stop messing with
Airboot and the battle between MS and IBM regarding extended partition
labelling as well as the danger I face when simply wanting to mount a
damned volume not "create/destroy".
Anyway, to my utter shock even though this box is a P2-866 it is
positively painfully slow at everything. Unfortunately my favorite
tweaking software, Clear & Simple's old Performance Plus, was only
stored on a floppy and after 8 years of abuse it has been rendered useless.
I remembered some basics like setting "maxwait=1" but even with
Dani's 506 there is a lot of disk activity just as if this was XP on a
32meg-o-ram P133. I don't even remember how to check to see how much ram
OS/2 sees. I also have no idea anymore what order of updates are
important. It was amazing to see how empty it appeared compared to my
ghosted install (guess I haven't been altogether lazy over the years).
So anyone with either specifics about above mentioned items or just
general recommendations for upgrade path please respond. If the group
considers this too off topic please send to my email addy but I imagine
this could be of interest to many.
Thanks
Jimmy
