That did the trick! Dani once more into the breach and to the rescue. I
even got lucky and found a wiki page explaining that the SiS 630 chip is
not in fact the model number of the vga core, which is a 305, meaning my
old copy of ibm's scitech driver works! So now this thing goes fast and
looks good doing it. From browsing around the internet it seems I'm gonna
need some more luckk since much of what used to be freely available is
either not available or not free. So I hope I've kept the full install
files for java, tcpip,etc around on some backup somewhere. But right now
I'm just stoked. Thanks very much for saving me a lot of rebooting and
sifting through forums.
