I'd have to do some digging to find the particulars, but as I recall it was
in the nature of a _promise_ made to some segments of the voters (who were
primarily concerned with second amendment issues) and then _broken_...

When one comes out taking a position that says that they're in support of our
rights, and then moves to the opposite pole, that makes a statement about
_their_ character.
