Liam Jordan wrote in a message to All: LJ> Herez a couple of questions: LJ> (1) If I had a laptop with one of those cellular modems, LJ> would I get really fast connections because it's connected LJ> to a digital network? If you are talking a GSM mobile, then no, they are limited to 9600, the "Modem" is really just a digital interface to the phone, and is useless on normal phonelines. I was suckered in by bellsouth in new zealands BS (BS=Bellsouth, or BullS... - Quite appropriate!) advertising saying that digital was better. It is not. My advice is to get a motorolla analog flip/pocket classic for next to nothing (They are practically giving them away in NZ with a 12 month contract to whatever cell provider the cell phone seller is connecting to )and a PCMCIA modem, you can use it as a 28k on your home lines, and upto about 19k--24k on the road. BS justify there lower BPS rates with a lower per minuite charge. Oh yeah, and don't try to run a analog modem thru a GSM cell phone, You may get a 1200 connect with heaps of errors. the audio quality of the GSM network is appauling when compared with the analog network and does not support analog modems thru it. I am thinking of returning my nokia 2110 and getting a analog phone. I am ashamed to have fallen for the "Digital=good" BS (BS = BullS...) LJ> (2) Why is the CRC check really sensitive on my computer LJ> when downloading via ZMODEM?. When it's writing to the hard LJ> drive, everything is going fine, but when it takes longer LJ> than it should (ie. moving the heads great distances across LJ> the disk), I get CRC errors. The same thing occurs while LJ> using SMARTDRIVE as well. Could someone please help me here Because your modem is not fitted with a burrered uart, and during the time that the HDD is writing, it disables interupts, so the character is lost and replaced with another one by the time the HDD write is finished. Don't use a write cache program, and see if your termanal has something along the lines of lower CTS on disk writing, If so, that will work by telling the modem to "Shut up and wait for a mo... The modem will stash all the data it's recieving in its little bit of memory, untill the write is done and the computer can recieve the data without loseing it. Otherwise try turning off the caching in your cmos setup, and see how that goes (Re enable it after!!). >>Cya ---* Origin: BLAH!!
