Michael, at 19:06 on Aug 11 1996, you wrote to Bill Grimsley...

MR> Yes it has but I doubt there is anything I can do about it.

Exactly, so there's no point slagging off at your modem for something which
is quite obviously beyond its control, is there?

MR> My Dynalink is a dog. Connects at 28800 are possible on some BBs' but I've

You have shitty lines, and the best modem in the world is not going to
change that fact. It's bad luck, but you're basically stuck with it.

MR> From Paul Marwick's BBS

That 29db S/N ratio is pretty piss-poor.

MR> Then from David Drummonds BBS

MR> SNR (dB) 39

That's better, but no less than I'd expect from Dave's board.

If you bothered reading the manual, you'd find that to be irrelevant.

MR> BTW on each of these calls I was using Dynalinks recommended init string of
MR> AT&F1&H1&R2X1.

They wouldn't know a decent init$ if it bit them on the arse. The
&H1&R2 are defaults for the &F1 template anyway. You DO have a
manual, dont you?

BG> AT&F1&K0 is still the optimal init$ for the Dynalink with dodgy BTLZ.

MR> Dynalink don't agree and my ISP reckons that I _have_ to have V.42 enabled
MR> for their modems (still trying to find out what sort they are)

For Christ's sake Mike, &K0 only disables V.42bis data compression.
V.42 (LAPM with MNP4 fallback) is enabled by default with the &F1
template.

MR> Hope you can shed some light on this for me Bill.

That's as clear as I can make it for you. If you still can't grasp that,
perhaps you'd better give up modems altogether...

Regards, Bill
