Not locking the DTE requires that you limit your port speed to connect
speed, and negates the advantages of error correction and compression.
Even with compressed files this results in a throughput of about 15%
less than possible.
 
Line noise, providing you are allowing error detecting modems to do
their thing (an unlocked DTE doesn't), is usually a matter between the
modems and not comm software, which will simply appear to slightly pause
while the ARQ modem light might blink if external. Usually when comm
software indicates resends and errors and error correction is being
allowed to work it indicates data overrun on the receiving modem. This
may involve flow control or hardware problems.
 
Then again, serious line noise problems, like someone picking up an
extension, could cause enough errors to trash an otherwise good session.
