I once heard a guy called Bob Larsen excoriate the late Stephen Jay Gould
on exactly that basis. I was not impressed. I've read dozens of SJG's clear
and well argued essays. BL went on to conduct an exorcism (of all things)
on some poor soul in Alaska who clearly had a borderline personality
disorder.
