Doubtful.  Eventually, your modem still goes through the same network as
the rest of us.  You'll just get more expensive connections.

Sounds a flow control problem.  While writing to disk, the computer isn't
reading from the serial port, but the modem is still sending data.

See the modem and software manuals for how to set up flow control.  Try
making your download buffer bigger as well.
