RUTH LEBLANC spoke of Spelling... 3/3 to CHARLES BEAMS on 09-
27-96
RL>You are not talking of the same thing that Dan is, Charles. Dan is
RL>talking from an Early Education Perspective not from a later
RL>educative one.
RL>Remember, Dan has repeatedly mentioned that young children cannot be
RL>expected to handle the same amount of structured "traditional"
RL>learning as an older child. Dan is speaking of teaching spelling to
RL>the young child. I think you will find that Dan agrees with you as
RL>far as older children go. Rules of spelling, etc. can be taught more
RL>formerly as a child gets older and their understanding of the
RL>language system is more highly developed.
Most elementary teachers probably have never had to sit through an Early
Childhood Education college class. I worked on my ECE endorcement while
preparing for my Master's degree. I also was kindergarten certified
which was required in Minnesota (where I attended undergrad school) if
one wanted to teach kindergarten. Everything I have ever stated
regarding ECE (and the things I have seen you write about) are right in
line with what is being taught in ECE classes. I took my Early
Childhood classes from University of Puget Sound. I refer to my test
book often.

Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong... NOT!
