GC> Tis computer iliterate I am.

I don't know. You've done fairly well so far. I would say perhaps Internet
unaware, but you're one of the lucky ones...

GC> I think a statment like `roger{at}tgw.apana.org.au' is an address to send
GC> something to a an certain person..

Correct. It is an address internet email address.

GC> If it is is, how is it arrived at?

OK. Take the person's name or handle (in this case, roger), add a `{at}' to
it, then add the persons site address. (in this case, tgw.apana.org.au).

To obtain the site address is basically a case of choosing a name.
Generally it is required that you then put stuff on the end to show what
area of the internet your domain is in, in this case apana.org.au - from
 this end, we've got:

au - this shows that the domain is in Australia. I don't know what other
countries put, but there are also ones for military and education sites.

org - is just something some service providers put in. I don't know why
 it's in there.

apana - shows the group the site is taking it's service from, in this case
APANA. This is a bunch of people who are supposedly trying to create cheap
internet access by getting groups of people together and sharing the costs.
Frankly, I'm very suspiscious of them, but I won't go creating fear in the
masses. If you want to know, netmail me and I'll explain it to you.

tgw - this is the particular site name. In this case, it's technology gone
 wild. Fairly OK place.

GC> It looks a little confusing to me and it is so involved how does one
 GC> remember it?

Very confusing until you break it down and work out what each bit means
 individually.

To remember it there have been many programs written for many platforms
which allow you to enter a person's name, their address, and some notes.
Don't ever try to remember a person's address off by heart. Always have a
backup on paper or computer disk.

For more information on the internet, pick up begginner's guide to the
internet - available from many BBSs, and the internet I'm sure.

 See ya,
        Maddy
