To me, the computer is wonderful for research (if you have a good CD ROM
encyclopedia, for instance, or perhaps you can tie into the Internet in some
way), and also for skill-and-drill in a pleasant way.

ard
I'm not sure on the Science bit, except that the Magic School Bus programs
are ALL rated quite highly. Our library system has the Outer Space and the
Human Body programs on their computers.
For US Social Studies, there are three that you "don't wanna miss". One is
perfect for Jeremy now. Look on local boards for a program called GEOUSA.
It's a Windoze (3.1) geography program that "tests" kids on locating the
states, the major waterways of America, the state capitols, and the largest
cities in each state. You can test all four at once, just one at a time, or a
mixture of two or three. It's shareware and now on my list of programs to
register as I get the cash. My husband even likes to play this one
periodically, with the state capitols and largest cities built in.
Another one is by Dinosoft. It's a geography CD ROM. My parents got it
for the girls. It has states, state abbreviations, historical timelines, etc,
all for the US. I'm not sure where my parents got it, but I'm sure it's not
shareware.
A third one is called the Oregon Trail. It's by MECC, I think. Our Target
store carries it. Or find someone unloading an old version - grin.
For Math, look on a local board for something called Treasure Hunt Math.
THMATH, I think it's usually abbreviated. It comes with two of the modules
(addition and Subtraction?) built in. The rest you get when you register,
which my parents did for us. We now have the full gamut. It's one of the
girls' favorite programs.
Hope this helps.
