[WAG] Sounds as though your power supply might not currently be up to 
it? :-(
I have every EIDE drive on every system** here(2 per, and under WC3 >> 
W4 FP16-17 >>MCPx|eCS 1.x ) in removable drawers, all as respective 
Masters, makes swapping very simple - makes absolutely no difference - 
my only slow-down is with old Adaptec HBAs - especially a dual channel 
AHA-3940U/UW with two 9GB disks attached - especially after POST has 
completed, and before BM|SC Menu :-)

Varies from fanless P90 on AMI mobo to AMD Duron 1.2G [Athlon 1500+ (?) 
off-air currently due lightning strike damage :'( ].
