There are two phenomena that must have
biological terms. Can anyone help with these?

1. There is a desert zone across the planet
in the subtropical areas lining the tropic of
Capricorn and Cancer - is there a term for that?

2. I note that slow metabolism = long life in
the longest living creatures and plants, lichen,
the Welsitsdchia mirabilis, millenium plant, 
tortoises, bristlecone pines,
etc. Is there a term or model for that idea?
