PL>> Aparently there is a guy, "John Riley", who claims to
have bought the

SD> "John Riley" is a real person and a good friend of mine.

Ah... yes... I knew he is a real guy. I have exchanged messages with him
on his BBS... not recently though. I log into the BBS from time to time to
see if there is any news.

PL>> rights to PB off of Pat Clawson, but that Pat Clawson ended up -not-
PL>> providing the source code and that Pat claimed he only sold the
 PL>> rights
PL>> to the use of the name of ProBoard and ther right to release new
PL>> versions of it, but that he didn't sell the actual source code itself
PL>> (or something like that... it's confusing to me).

SD> Well, Mr. Pat "Asshole" Clawson basically lied to John in the midst
SD> of negotiations, then promptly disappeared.

That doesn't suprise me. I myself have had dealings with 'ol Clownson.

 SD> Evidently one of Mr.
SD> Clawson's former programmers is looking for him too and it's not
 SD> for any friendly reasons.

That doesn't suprise me.

SD> There was a freeware release of 2.17 (you
SD> can check it out yourself since I'm running it). It's rather
SD> dubious in origin, but for some reason, neither the original
SD> author, Phillippe Leybaert, nor Pat Clawson, have bothered to try
SD> to stop the dissemination of this freeware version.

I'm familiar with this release. Have it set up actually, just don;t run it
at present. Been playing with EleBBS since Clownson pulled his boners.
The 2.17 freeware release is nothing more than the Miha Ulinov Y2K patch
and a PB2.16 crack installed, and everything repackages and a
"note" in the docs.

If I were to run it again I would have no reservations about it, as I was a
registered 2.16 SysOp and I don;t believe a Y2K patch warrants an upgrade
fee... No matter what anybody would say I would feel well within my rights
to run 2.17 as a "registered" user.

PL>> Anyway, the guy has been claiming a new 32bit release if pending, and
PL>> supposedly had a small development team working on it, but since I
PL>> found out about this over a year ago I haven't seen anything happen
PL>> except the guy making a faulty windows installer for the 2.17 release
PL>> that claims to be freeware.

SD> FWIW, it wasn't John that made that Windows installer, it was
 SD> someone else.

I can't remember what the specific problem was with it, but it was enough
to make me yank it off the system and go back to a 2.17 install... it
screwed -something- up, can;t remember what now though.

SD> John couldn't program to save his life. :)

I recall he had some development team working on a 32bit release, but it
was chaos from John's comments. Another big issue with the 32bit release
idea is it seemed they were having problems getting 16bit PEX's to run.
Gotta have the PEX's man!

 SD> There is
SD> another sysop, Rob King, who is working on a ProBoard clone
SD> (workalike?) for Win32, OS/2, DOS and Linux.

PEX support??? If so, I'm interested.

PL>> Personaly I loved ProBoard and have considered setting it up again.
PL>> There is an FAQ on the guys BBS that can help you set up PB 2.17 with
PL>> GameSrv as a telent front end rather qickly if you want.

SD> I can tell you how to do that with GameSrv, VMODEM and a few other
SD> front-ends too. It's not too hard at all.

Already done awhile ago. Only took a couple of minutes. :)
