CG>Being cheap by nature, I hit on the idea of stealing the 16-
CG>litre plastic tubs discarded by most restaurants. Right there on
CG>the kerb, with the garbage, one can somewhat illegally collect
CG>these sturdy white plastic tubs with handles AND WITH THE LIDS.
CG>Do it in the dead of night, when noone will see you.
You just like living dangerously, Chris. :-) You can buy those tubs
for a buck or so from the bakery depts. of large stores (and
bakeries). That's how I've gotten mine.
CG>By having four or five tubs going, I'm cascading soil+worms from
CG>one to the other. The greedy monsters have plenty of time to work
CG>over a tub before they get troweled into a fresh tub.
I still do a lot of from-scratch cooking; no doubt I can use 3-4 tubs.
(Until earlier this year, I recycled garbage through my goats, dogs,
and "wild" earthworms from sheet composting. But I have a
vermi-composter somewhere that I'd like to activate.)
CG>I can yank a tub of soil (for use as potting medium) out of the
CG>cycle at any time.
That's what I'd like.
CG>I sit the tubs on any kind of impervious plastic sheet or tray to
CG>collect surplus fluid. But see below.
CG>refuse pieces, including coffee-grounds and tea-leaves. The lid
CG>stays on. Excess fluids drain from this tub overnight, and first
CG>thing in the morning I put the drained matter in the composter.
CG>Not so much excess fluid for me, ho ho!
Ever squeeze a teabag? sly grin>
CG>Alternate source of tubs: I get my ice-cream in 15-litre piails
CG>direct from the factory. These pails are slightly less robust,
CG>but they'll do. You can use them, too, as hlders for larger pot-
CG>plants.
Or grainbins, flour bins, pet food bins, large salad mixing bowls,
etc. Very useful items. Thanks for your experiences, Chris.
