RL> That's about the limit for either tube. The difference is that the
L34,
RL> with it's higher plate capacity, is more of a hi-fidelity tube. It is
RL> very common to see plate voltages in the 700 to 1000 volt range in hi-fi
RL> gear producing surprisingly low wattages. If the 5150 is pushing a
RL> quartet of 6L6s to 120 watts, I would expect output distortion to be
RL> somewhere in the range of a late silverface Fender Twin Reverb, which
as
RL> virtually none before you go deaf.
Really? Hmmm... Surprising about the low wattage... What if they were
to produce a tube with the voltage rating of an EL34 but the efficiency (volt
to watt) of a 6L6GC? That would be somewhere around 200 watts, huh?
Well, considering that Sir Edward very rarely plays at low volume and almost
never clean... :)
RL> It does sound like something was wrong with it.
       Hmmmm... Yup. :)
