I would strongly second the recommendation of F, with one caveat. If you are
connected to an FTP host and haven't used it in a few hours or more, if the
host has gone down or otherwise become available during that time, and if you
attempt to refresh a file listing from the host with F12, version 4.79 of F
for OS/2 freezes and must be killed and restarted.

F claims that Ctrl-Break followed by Esc will kill just that sub-process, but
that doesn't work here.
