Yeah -- I remember one Congresswoman's shocked comment about the AK-47,
"They don't miss!" I'd like to give her a chance at busting
dinner plates at a hundred yards off-hand and see if she chances her mind.
I once went up to speak to a committee of the Virginia State Legislature.
An anti-gun speaker before me delivered a shocking address about how
people at a local gun club were shooting guns with "supersonic
bullets."
Fortunately, my turn was next. I pointed out the .30-06 has a muzzle
velocity about 2 1/2 times the speed of sound -- and was adopted in 1906,
the .30-30, dating to 1895 has a muzzle velocity twice the speed of sound,
and the lowly .22 Long Rifle, dating to 1888 has a muzzle velocity above
the speed of sound.
I told them about the "management letters" old Pennsylvania
riflesmiths would write for their customers, advising them to "load
her until she cracks" -- that is breaks the sound barrier.
And finally wound up telling them rifles were invented in Germany about
1500, and while I can't swear to it, I bet those old German gunsmiths knew
about "load her until she cracks."

My daughter grew up with guns in the house, and knew they were all loaded
-- until they proved otherwise. They also knew that a couple of them were
really loaded and stayed that way.
