subject: Re: [OS2HW] CPU heat

Hey Jim

Since I recently posted that I try to keep my idle temps under 40C I
suppose I should qualify that in response to your question and since lately
there is considerable variation among brands and models as to what
constitutes safe temps. The reason I so cavalierly stated "under
40C" is that I have never owned an Intel P4 and apparently the
Prescott family runs very very hot. It is part of the reason that Intel's
new (and very promising) core, Conroe et al, have evolved from the
"M" series. I'm betting deep pipelines a la Prescott will return
in the future but for now it's basically dead.

Anyway the only way to be certain of upper limits is to research the
exact CPU while remembering that cooler is better as long as it doesn't get
ridiculously expensive. As for the specific question of "Does anybody
actually run at 80C?" I can say firmly that I never will. Even if the
CPU can stand it there is no way I am going to subject the other components
inside the PC case to that level of thermal abuse. I am quite certain this
would at the very least substantially shorten fan life since at some
altitudes where humans reside 80C is just shy of the boiling point of
water. 60C is commonly referred to as the threshold of pain. So while I
might accept such temps under the hood of my car, I don't even want my hot
water heater getting to 80C let alone any part of my PC.
