33.6k _is_ pretty much the practical limit for sending data over analog phone 
lines.  If you look closely at USR's information though, you'll notice that 
x2 requires the server to be digitally connected to the phone system in order 
for the receiver to be able to achieve 56k speeds.  From the little I read, 
x2 seems to be sort of a cross between a traditional modem and ISDN.  Its a 
neat idea, but because of the way it works two average people with analog 
phone lines and x2 compatable modems will not be able to connect to each 
other at anything higher than 33.6k. :/  At least that's how I understood it. 
 USR's x2 'information' was largely marketing hype and didn't get very 
technical, so I could be mistaken.
