LAUNCHES
ARIANE--Ariane successfully launched Hot Bird 3 and Meteosat 7 at
22:21 hrs UTC on September 2.
Hot Bird 3 will be co-located with Eutelsat II-F1 and Hot Birds 1 and
2 at 13 degrees East. The satellite carries 20 transponders in the
12.111-12.475 GHz range, and will mainly be used for digital services.
Besides broadcasts to Europe, the satellite also will have a steerable
spot beam centered on South Africa.
The geostationary weather satellite Meteosat-7 will be placed at 0
degrees longitude. It carries one S-band and one UHF-band transponder.

The launch of Scandinavia's new Sirius 2 satellite on Ariane flight
102, along with Indonesia's Cakrawatra 1, has been postponed until the
end of October, as a computer has to be replaced on the Sirius
satellite. Swedish Television's new SVT International channel is
expected to start during December. Nokia is outfitting its DVB 9600S
receivers with Viaccess CAM-modules for SVT International reception.
Subscriptions will cost SEK 200 for the smartcard and SEK 1000 a year
plus VAT. (NSAB and Richard Karlsson) Radio Sweden will be among the
audio channels on SVT International.
Cakrawarta, which means "news weapon" in Indonesian, will deliver
programming from five different private television networks across the
country.
Hot Bird 4 and BSAT 1B are scheduled to launch on Ariane flight 104 on

ATLAS--GE-3 is scheduled to launch with Atlas September 3, at 12:02-
12:30 hrs UTC. It will be located at 87 degrees West. Live coverage on
GE-1 on 3.960 GHz (W1-13) and Telstar 4 on 11.923 GHz on the PBS

ASTRA--The launch of the digital Astra 2A satellite, which will be
used for BSkyB's new digital package at 28 degrees East, has been
delayed until December. ("What Satellite TV")

BBC--Besides the regular BBC site at www.bbc.co.uk, the BBC has a new

This is described as "the entertainment and information service from
the BBC, with the personalities and brands and a lot of attitude. the
score! for the latest sports coverage and results; Radio Times for
listings, star interviews and film reviews; Top Gear for motoring
news, car tests and car guides; BBC Shop for BBC merchandise; Comedy
Zone for humour and entertainment; and travel for destination and

The Radio Times section allows you to set up your own personalized
listings for a partcular day, with both domestic and satellite TV and
radio channels.

about international broadcasting. Radio Sweden has presented this
round-up of radio news, features, and interviews on Tuesdays since
1948. It's currently broadcast on the first and third Tuesdays of the
month.
