Get hold of a black burst generator and feed the output into the VCR. :-)
If you don't have one of these, make one! Get an old home computer with a TV
standard output (whoops, nearly said PAL there) and connect the composite
output to the VCR input. Set the computer to display a black screen.
An old VIC-20, C64 or BBC Micro (aka Acorn Proton) is ideal for this. Type
POKE 36879,8 followed by CTRL-1 on the Commodore machines IIRC, or type
VDU12,23;8202;0;0;0;0;21 on an Acorn machine.
Other machines - pass! Should be possible though.
