Had Ike abandoned the southern campaign in eastern France, Monty's ideas
would have borne fruit -- get to the Ruhr valley and drive a stake into the
ability of the Germans to provide logistical support.
The Germans realize in 1940 that attacking through eastern France was
unneccessary. Not only the Maginot Line was a problem. The Moselle River
and its tributaries were a big problem for any armored elements without
huge engineering feats.
Easier to attack from the Ardennes.
