I've often heard that, but there were many tactical issues which originated
above Patton. First was the decision for 3rd Army to push into Germany
through Lorraine. Second was the inability of the 1st Army to secure Calais
and Antwerp, necessitating the use of the Red Ball Express. And third was
the opportunity lost to Patton by transfer of 2 corps to another Army (1st)
and the resultant loss of firepower in an area where a great offense is
necessary. Patton's troops suffered many casualties to be sure, and Patton
had a lot of responsibility for those losses. But there really wasn't much
strategic value beyond the Saar.
