For several years now I have been using a QVS 2-port KVM switch (they
also make a 4-port model) that connects by USB cables to the computers
but can accept either PS/2- or USB-connected keyboard and mouse. This
enables me to use my cordless trackball (USB from receiver to KVM
switch) and my ancient PS/2-only Gateway 2000 "AnyKey" keyboard, which
has 12 function keys on the left (the only sensible location, permitting
the use of almost any combination of Ctrl, Shift, Alt and F-key with
only the left hand).

Switching between machines is either by a button on the front of the KVM
or by ScrollLock, ScrollLock, UpArrow (or DownArrow) keystrokes.
