I have a couple of Pdoxdos aps that I would like to gradually move over
to Windoze. At one location, many of the workstations are
low-powered hardware (donated) that runs Paradox DOS tolerably,
but are unusable with Win. As a result, I'd like to keep all DBs
DOS/Win compatible and keep using Pdoxdos (4.0) as necessary.
Additionally, those workstations that *do* run Win are mostly
386DX25s or 40s. Nothing much better than that, so I don't want
to bog them down with anything too intensive.
I am a novice to intermediate, part time PAL programmer and have
never used Pdoxwin, but I am thinking of going to Delphi. I
understand (based on Borland's advertising materials) that Delphi
will compile a much faster ap than ObjectPAL, and is compatible
with existing Pdoxdos tables. If this is true, why should I
bother to learn OPAL too, instead of just jumping into Delphi?
Am I making a mistake? Any input will be most appreciated.

Jack, I think your NOT missing anything on choosing Delphi. I am a VERY
experienced PAL programmer not willing to make the move to Paradox/WIN.
First of all, I think it's too slow, especially on a faster PC(pentium),
that's for large db's I mean. You really should upgrade those PC's to
run any windows apps. your missing most of the power of windows with
those slow machines. Let me know if you need more!!!

Well Delphi is a different animal, but you may be much better off there for
future compatibility. I know I am moving to it.

You should seriously consider upgrading. They should be no less than 486DX's
with a minimum of 8MBs of RAM. While Delphi and PdoxWin will run it will be
painfully slow.
