Hi Laura,
    I bought a 1980 3/4 ton GMC Camper Special 4*4. It has a 350 engine,
a TH400 trany, and the Heavy Duty gear drive transfer case. The Camper
Specials have big brakes, radiator, and oil coolers stock. You should
be able to find a similar truck in good condition for under $6,000.
A truck like this will haul your horse trailer with no problem.
A long bed has a longer wheel base and is more stable for hauling
trailers. I threw away the 16.5 tires that came with it and put on some
235-16 inch "E" rated tires and it steers better and carries heavy loads
better. I also installed air bags on the rear suspension that can be
inflated and deflated from inside the cab,so the truck can be leveled out
with any load.
The Automatic is nice for everyday driving and for climbing up hills.
The disadvantage is if you come down a long windy hill you have to ride the
brakes and they get hot and start to fade. I put mine in low range and
that helps a little, but the manual trany has the advantage here.
I would stear clear of the truck trany's with overdrive. They don't
seem to hold up as well as the TH-400.
If you can find a Big Block engine, get it. They have more power and
the milage isn't much different. A mid 80's truck with fuel injection
has more power and better milage also.
4 wheel drive is needed if you get on steep gravel roads with a heavy
trailer.
If you find a truck that is just right for hauling your horse, have it
inspected by a good mechanic before you buy it. It could save some surprises.
    Good Luck:^)
                                   ......Dave......
