Yeehaa Kees,
Kv> When driving to/from Calais I mainly remeber traffic jams going
Kv> east/north
Kv> between Ostende and Gent and on the south bank of the Schelde in front
Kv> of the Kennedy-tunnel.
"Timing" is the holy cow ... never, like in "jamais", take that route eastbound
between 1pm and 8pm. That tunnel has been a planning disaster from the early
60-ies with no idea about traffic evolution. When it first opened, there hardly
were cars.
Now just hundreds of meters before the tunnel there are 7 (as in "seven") lanes
merging into 3 (as in "three") ... during rush hours that is a nightmare. Go to
Terneuzen, take that toll-tunnel and drive through Zeeland, maybe more
kilometers but probably hours faster at certain moments.
Kv> I also still have nightmares of a Belgian truck dropping
Kv> a steel bar in front of me on the motorway north of Luik.
I had a light-fixture of one of those highway lights detach and crash just in
front of me.
Also on a Dutch highway somewhere between Breda on the way to Nijmegen at full
speed in the left lane, a feasant and her chicks decided to cross. When I went
over here that was the loudest bang ever and in the rearview mirror I noticed a
cloud of feathers. I thought my car exploded and was total loss.
Slightly reminded me of the eagle I killed last September ... on an Indian
reservation in NA.
