Hi,
This could be a bad or dirty sensor so it may be confused as to the state of the 
CD drive. Have you tried a soft eject in the WPS? If you soft eject it with the 
door open does it close, close/open or do nothing?

It really does sound like either a mechanical or electronic failure. I have a 
44X CD that won't open 50% of the time. I end up having to use the paper clip 
that I keep around. Fortunately other than that it works fine. But a CD that 
stays open is unusable.
