Have you tried a soft eject in the WPS? If you soft eject it with the door open does it close, close/open or do nothing? It really does sound like either a mechanical or electronic failure. I have a 44X CD that won't open 50% of the time. I end up having to use the paper clip that I keep around. Fortunately other than that it works fine. But a CD that stays open is unusable.
