No lead in solder?! Now you've really got me interested. I admit I have
not bought solder for years, but both rolls I do have are 60%tin and 40%
lead with some sort of rosin flux down the center. So says label. Cheap
-er solder has maybe 50%tin/50%lead and has higher melting point.
Needless to say there are little balls of it behind furniture and on top
of cupboards wherever I've worked on connections for lamps or stereo or
whatever. Budger gets sick when very young, vet X-rays and finds very
dense particle in crop, vet treats bird with heavy-metal chelators,
Budger gets better, vet charges hundreds of dollars. What to conclude?
If you know of a lead-free formulation, I would sure like to hear what
it is called and what metals are present in it. I'm sure there are many
others here among the bird&computer types who have the same potential
problem with solder globules around the house. Tell us more!
