You are not talking of the same thing that Dan is, Charles. Dan is
talking from an Early Education Perspective not from a later educative
one.
Remember, Dan has repeatedly mentioned that young children cannot be
expected to handle the same amount of structured "traditional" learning
as an older child. Dan is speaking of teaching spelling to the young
child. I think you will find that Dan agrees with you as far as older
children go. Rules of spelling, etc. can be taught more formerly as a
child gets older and their understanding of the language system is more
highly developed.
 Well, this is a long one - sorry - but you know how I get when I climb
on my soapbox. ;)
