 On my system, 4:3 is

I would expect all you are looking for is a resolution that your video
card supports that has the ratio between horiziontal and vertical pixels
in the same ratio as the physical monitors size.

In this way the application will be "told" that they simply have a wider
"playing field" and should display correctly.

You may find that your current video card does not support such a
resolution however. In this case you'll either have to put up with the
distortion or the black border bars or you will have to buy a supported
video card that does have a suitable resolution to replace your current
video card.
