That was my plan, and it still is. When the old motherbord died, I had to
quickly decide what to do. I had a spare mobo, but it was also so old that
I decided to go virtual.. So this system is running in vmware workstation
now until I have time and hardware to put it in esxi.

I simply took out the harddisk, put it into usb docking station and
converted it to .vmdk disk image. Not much to do after, just to replace the
network drivers. Pretty painless operation.
