From your comments and other replies it appears that I would have to drop all
the way back to C to pick up the control over timeouts.....;-( Its not exactly 
an important requirement so may have to put this part of the project on the
back-burner, my meddling with REXX extension .DLL's has not exactly been a
great success story so far.
